I'm moving!

Or rather the blog is... I just got sick of having to deal with pictures not aligning properly, having to resize them in the HTML every post and text not looking how I want it. So where is it moving to then? Tumblr. I managed to find a free theme I actually don't hate and everything looks neat, clean and very minimalist. Without all the superfluous crap everywhere, there's more of a focus on content. I've already moved some of the more important posts over with more to follow, but I won't be moving all of them. Cause you know, CBF... I'm still ironing out a few issues here and there but if you want to see how the new and improved d! Konstruct looks, why not check out? d-konstruct.tumblr.com

Progress and possible leads

Study For Little Match Girl
The first "Pop Art" I ever saw
Possible streaky technique I'll use for the hair in the final version
So I finally finished the first study for my first painting! It's the lady from Redheads matches. This brand of matches have been around forever in Australia and it was the first Pop Art I ever saw. I didn't know it when I was a kid though, but I always though it was really cool. It'll look so awesome on a large canvas hanging on a wall.

This first attempt turned out okay. I found a tube of really nice iridescent white for the face. But I applied it somewhat unevenly and I had to patch up certain areas when I hand-smudged some red! The lines aren't as crisp as I'd like — because of the CRAPPY MASKING TAPE — and I'll have to get new brushes too. But aside from that, I think it looks okay for a first attempt. Next time I'll try a streaky technique on the hair for a more textured look. Won't go as dark as that test though.

And now for the masking tape story...
I mentioned a few posts ago that I was looking for some fancy masking tape — 3M 471 Plastic Tape — that people use to air-brush flames and skulls on car bodies and motor cycles. The kind that works well on curves. They don't sell it in Perth so I went on eBay and Amazon.com first and found it. $9.47 + $59.74 SHIPPING!!!!! OMFG!!!! I just CANNOT understand how they get to $59.74 just for shipping!!! Do they have to put a roll of tape in a reinforced steel box filled with magical futuristic packing liquid??? And then I tried looking interstate.

After 2 days of extensive Googling, I managed to find a place in WA that sells the kind of tape I'm after. I came across it quite by accident when I was looking for air-brushing accessory shops over east. The tape they sell isn't the exact brand I want but it is for air-brushing and looks like it'll do the job. When I looked up the location of the shop and saw it was in Midvale — near Midland — I was actually quite surprised. But I knew there were plenty of bogans in WA who'd want skulls and flames painted on the side of their utes/hot rods/choppers and someone has to supply the painters with that fancy tape right?

So then I did a map search and saw a street view of the place... The shop itself is in one of those creepy-looking industrial areas full of warehouses — perfect for a body-dump scene in Dexter or something. But I'm willing to go to Body-dump-vale to fetch this tape. Yes, well, if you don't hear from me in a while you'll know where to look...

Progress and purchases

Ladies and Gentlemen, an A3 light table...
Does this look familiar yet?
So I went to Spotlight yesterday to see if they had that special plastic masking tape I was looking for and left with an A3 LED light table. Okay, it was an impulse buy. But I will actually need it when I trace things for illustration work and art stuff. I already have a light box that I bought a few years ago which still works but now it's too small for what I need it for. This new one is totally awesome, it's really thin and you can adjust the brightness. The only shortfall is the that power cord isn't long enough — get it, shortfall.

Did I mention I got a 27" monitor I got last week which I can't use yet. I'm waiting for the stupid Thunderbolt–to-HDMI cable from eBay to arrive. There's no frickin' way I'd pay $1200 for an Apple monitor!

Having a huge monitor and light table will certainly make drawing, painting and vector work easier... Cause I'll be doing a LOT MORE of that this year. Somehow I'll find the space and time... I just have to...

Speaking of which, I made progress on the study for my first painting. Slow progress. More on that soon... And I'm still trying to find that plastic masking tape, might have to order it online from the eastern states. This is starting to annoy me now!

I'm making an art!

Super sneaky sneak peek! Can you guess who that is?
I even bought supplies especially for this...
So I'm back! And I'm making an art! Lol... I have been busy — house hunting, sick cat, feeling a bit meh — for the last few months and hadn't had the time to do anything much worth posting. I have a few things but we'll see. Anyway last year, I said I'd start painting again and here's my first attempt in years. Not the most original subject matter ever but I always thought it was awesome! It's just a start after all. I bought a small canvas first as a test, then I'll get a bigger one when I've had a little practice painting. I mean I don't want to ruin a giant canvas the first chance I get after all. I also discovered one of my best brushes is moulting.

That attempt above is not on the mini canvas but a piece of A4 canvas paper I bought years ago. That was to see how well masking tape works on curves. Turns out it's SHIT!!! I'll have to buy a roll of thin Scotch 471 Plastic Tape online before I try anything larger. It's the stuff that people use to air-brush flames on motor cycles and car bodies. I did a bit of looking and they don't sell it in Perth. Hmm...

More updates soon...

I know EVEN MORE shortcuts!

All the CS6 shortcuts!

Hooray!!!! The CS6 shortcut sheets are finally finished!!! Use the stupid hard-to-see link above to download them. I tried to make it red!

I suppose I've been working on them since the end of November. I did finish them sooner but I was kinda busy and then I found a way to make them even more AWESOME! I finally figured out the stupid Apple modifier key symbols (Command, Shift, Option, Control), and included them on the top. Why are they stupid? Well, the symbols all over drop-down menus but not on the actual Apple keyboard itself! Which makes soooo much sense. I used only the symbols because they really ought to be memorised. Once you do, you can figure out all the shortcuts in any program by yourselves! Something useful to remember is 'shift up', since shifting is movement. Then the others are easy. Everyone knows the squiggly Command key right? The ONLY symbol on the keyboard.

Because I included the symbols instead of words, it took a little longer to double-check everything and get it right the first time. I certainly didn't want to give you guys dodgy stuff riddled with mistakes and spelling errors. And before you ask, we spell 'colour' with a 'u' and 'minimise' with an 's' in Australia, that's just how we roll. So what else is new this time? I modified the leading to make space for even more useful shortcuts! Anyway, I hope you find them useful!

——————————————ATTENTION——————————————
If anyone plans to put my shortcut sheets on their blog/website (or some random Spanish infographic websites, you know who you are), could you mention me, Dijana Jovanovic, and link back to my blog — d-konstruct.blogspot.com

It's only fair you know, it is my work after all! I'm totally cool with my work being put on other sites like Pinterest or whatever (since it links back to me), in fact that's awesome and I love it. Anyway... I so rarely do things out of the kindness of my heart, so a mention is always nice...

Ahoy, me hearties!

Does that rope look familiar?
Yo ho ho!
I'm working on another little project. I won't give any hints just yet, but these are the first super-rough sketches. Lets just say it'll be both useful and EPIC! I was so into it that I stayed up til nearly 4am drawing! I might even break out the water colours!

It's been such a long time since I actually drew things by hand (illustrative work). I was rather happy to discover I can still draw and emulate other styles as well — Sailor tattoos. Art by Sailor Jerry and Angelique Houtkamp was particularly inspiring.
